THE GRINDCARE SOLUTION
GrindCare makes use of a natural reflex to reduce your grinding or clenching. GrindCare’s mode of action is based on what is known as the masseter silent period. The masseter silent period is an interruption in muscle activity for a short period of 10-100 ms. It occurs when a natural inhibitory reflex is initiated by sensory input to the skin over the temporalis or masseter muscles. This silent period thus instantly interrupts any grinding or clenching activity.
Helps break the habit of sleep bruxism over time. During use, GrindCare´s compact wireless sensor continuously registers the EMG signals that muscles produce when they contract. Whenever the EMG signal exceeds the defined threshold, a Contingent Electrical Stimulation (CES) is triggered. This CES impulse, which can be adjusted to meet individual sensitivity levels, stimulates receptors in the skin. This instantly sends signals to relax the major chewing muscles to help stop the grinding or clenching, without requiring any conscious action from the user. Over time, these mild CES impulses improve your natural reflexes so that the unhealthy habit of grinding can be progressively unlearned.
Monitors EMG activity. GrindCare registers the electromyographic (EMG) signals that muscles produce when the muscle tissue is active. The signals originate from electric currents that pass in and out across the membranes of muscle cells.
Contingent Electrical Stimulation. The CES impulse stimulates the mechano-receptors located in the skin. This initiates the exteroceptive suppression reflex, which makes the major chewing muscles relax and thereby inhibits the grinding or clenching.
Allows you to visualize bruxism activity and track progress. In the morning, the data registered by the sensor is automatically transferred to the GrindCare docking station from where it can be wirelessly transmitted to the GrindCare app. This app allows you to visualize your sleep bruxism activity over time and track your progress since the beginning of your treatment with GrindCare. In combination with the diary function, it will also enable you to enter relevant observations so that you can try to identify your primary bruxism triggers.

On average, most people start to see a significant improvement after just 3 weeks of use in treatment mode (stimulation level more than 0), but this can vary from person to person.
You can adapt the frequency of usage as needed to keep your bruxism under control. Most users, however, start by using GrindCare in treatment mode on a nightly basis for an initial period of 3 to 4 weeks until they start to experience a reduction in grinding or clenching and/or secondary symptoms.
To visualize and establish their baseline grinding level before starting their treatment, most users also find it beneficial to start by using GrindCare for several days with the stimulation level set on 0. Your doctor or dentist will be able to advise you as to the most appropriate way to continue using GrindCare to best manage your particular condition over the long term.
Yes, there have been many clinical studies conducted around the world, including several scientific articles published in international peer-reviewed journals. See our Clinical Evidence page [link] for more information.
No, using GrindCare does not disturb or interrupt sleep. It uses a mild contingent impulse that can be adjusted to your personal sensitivity level so that you will not even notice it while you sleep. There is no audio signal or other form of disruption as there is no need to make you conscious of your grinding.
In fact, clinical studies have confirmed, that users sleep just as well with GrindCare treatment as they do without it. This is an important advantage in terms of compliance and ultimately treatment success. An investigation in a sleep lab showed that total sleep time, number of micro-arousals per hour of sleep, and time spent in rapid eye movement (REM) were not influenced by GrindCare treatment. For more information, you can consult our studies on this topic (link to sleep section of evidence page).
No, using GrindCare will not disturb your partner’s sleep. The compact GrindCare sensor does not emit any sound or light during the night. In fact, even you should not notice a thing while it works to monitor and reduce your grinding or clenching while you sleep.
The ergonomic wireless Sensor is extremely light and compact, measuring around 4 cm from top to bottom and weighing less than 10 grams including an attached GelPad.
GrindCare has been tested on a large number of different head shapes. The flexible flaps on the Sensor ensure that GrindCare will securely fit on almost any head shape.
The GrindCare solution comes with a GrindCare app for your mobile device that you can download free of charge in the Apple App store or Google Play. With this GrindCare app, you can review your night’s grinding, enter diary notes and track your treatment progress. The GrindCare app is optional and for information purposes only.
After waking up in the morning, you can transfer the previous night’s treatment data from the docking station to the app. To do this, make sure that the docking station is connected to a power outlet. Then place the sensor in the charging bay of the docking station, and then open the app to transfer the data. Once the data has been transferred, you will be able to browse the app at your convenience.
In order to use the app, it first needs to be paired with the docking station. You only need to do this once. To pair the device, first make sure that the Bluetooth function is activated on your mobile device, that the mobile device is within ten meters of the docking station and that the docking station is powered on. Next, open the app by pressing the GrindCare icon on your mobile device and follow instructions.
Once the app has established a connection with the Docking Station, you will find on the home screen an overview of your grinding activity from the most recently transferred night’s data. The bars indicate when and how often the GrindCare Sensor detected grinding or clenching during your sleep. The time at the top indicates how long you slept with the GrindCare Sensor turned on, and the number on the top right indicates the total number of detected grinds or clenches for this particular night.
The app also has a diary function. Using the diary, you can select a smiley emoticon corresponding to how you felt upon waking up. You can also add a note describing how you felt or observations regarding life events or circumstances that you may later be able to correlate with your grinding data to help you identify your primary bruxism triggers.
The app also has a history tab where you will be able to review the progress of your nightly grinding or clenching activity along with how you felt on each corresponding morning and track your progress since the beginning of your treatment. Swipe the screen to scroll back in time. By selecting and pressing down continuously the bar of a particular night, you can access the more detailed results from that night.
